PEDESTRIANS HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY

Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Law Ch89SI1 states that the driver of a vehicle shall yield the right of way, slowing down or stopping if need be, so as to yield to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within a crosswalk.  Whoever violates any provisions of this section shall be punished by a fine of $100.00.

Drivers should make themselves aware of all crosswalk locations throughout the town. In particular, areas located near schools, hospitals, senior centers and business districts. These areas receive heavy pedestrian traffic requiring extra alertness by drivers in their travels. Remember, that the person who may be in that crosswalk could be your child, parent or friend that is placed in danger when a driver ignores the law.

The Ludlow Police Department strongly encourages drivers to adhere to the provisions of this law as we will strongly enforce them.
