| Scammer claims the victim has been selected to receive a grant | |
| Through the use of purchased list of names that are involved in certain activities (magazine subscriptions, etc.), the scammers can often convince the victim that the grant is for a project / subject matter that they are personally involved in | |
| After being awarded the "grant", the victim is instructed to send money for processing or other fees | |
| Once a payment has been sent, more payments may be requests for additional "fees and taxes" | |
